Why Thieves Should Think Twice About Striking a Property that has Security Gates
How Security Gates Deter Criminals
Security gates don’t just make it more difficult for a thief to break into a property, but they also actively deter criminals from considering your property a target. This means that your store, office, warehouse or other location will be safer and your assets will be more secure.
But why do security gates deter criminals? There are a number of reasons.
Thieves, obviously, do not want to get caught. For this reason, many look for crimes that they can completed quickly. After all, the less time you spend at the scene of a crime, the less likely you are to be captured. This reasoning has resulted in the popularity of “smash and grab” crimes.
In these crimes, the perpetrator uses brute force (such as a brick, rock or pipe) to smash through a door or window in order to gain access to a property. The criminal then steals as much as he or she can and leaves before anyone can respond.
Due to the speed of these crimes, they are often very successful. Smash and grab robberies are typically over in just a few minutes. In some cases, the crime takes only seconds. There just isn’t time for the authorities to respond. There is no way the police can arrive on scene within a few minutes, regardless of when they are called.
Smash and Grab Robberies and Security Tools
Most smash and grab robbers don’t care if a property has an alarm system installed. As mentioned, these crimes are typically over in just a few minutes. Even if a property has a monitored alarm system installed (where a central station can contact the police as soon as the alarm sounds), the police simply won’t be able to get there in time to catch the criminals in the act.
Many locations use video surveillance cameras in hopes of catching criminals while they commit crimes. Unfortunately, most criminals are aware of this and they take steps to conceal their identities during a smash and grab break in. By wearing hoods, scarves or masks, a criminal can become very tough to identify on video.
Due to these facts, it’s obvious that tools such as alarm systems or security cameras aren’t deterring criminals from striking. However, security gates can.
Security gates work by putting a physical barrier between criminals and your property. They can be installed on doors, windows and other points of access. Gates make it much more difficult to enter a property. Specifically, they prevent entry through typical “smash and grab” tactics. As mentioned, in most of these robberies, criminals use items such as bricks, rocks and other such crude tools. These tools are not very effective against security gates.
This means that a criminal will need to attempt more sophisticated and time consuming methods in order to gain entry. Not only are these methods more difficult, but they also increase the amount of time that a criminal needs to spend on the site. This makes it much more likely that they will be caught in the act. For this reason, criminals often avoid these properties. It simply isn’t worth the risk to them, and thieves should think twice about striking a property that has security gates.
